Highlanders Eye Back-to-Back Durand Cup Glory After Gritty Run to the Final

NorthEast United FC overcome injuries, tough opponents, and close battles to reach their second consecutive Durand Cup final, setting up a clash against debutants Diamond Harbour FC.

Kolkata (West Bengal), August 23: NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) have proved that their Durand Cup triumph in 2024 was no one-off. By securing a place in the 2025 final, the Highlanders have underlined their transformation from perennial underachievers to genuine title contenders in Indian football.

Last year’s victory was the club’s first-ever major silverware, a moment that reshaped their identity. Twelve months later, coach Juan Pedro Benali’s side has shown resilience in a campaign marked by challenges, including the departures of key players Mohammed Ali Bemmamer and Nestor Albiach.

Group Stage Battles

The Highlanders opened their title defence with a commanding 3-1 win over the Armed Forces of Malaysia, thanks to a hat-trick from last season’s ISL Golden Boot winner, Alaaeddine Ajaraie.

Their second game, a NorthEast derby against Shillong Lajong FC, tested their nerves. After conceding a late equaliser, Ajaraie struck again to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory. In their final group fixture, NEUFC rotated heavily and were held 2-2 by Rangdajied United FC. Despite the draw, they topped Group E unbeaten.

Knockout Stage Resilience

In the quarter-final, the Highlanders dismantled Bodoland FC 4-0 with a ruthless second-half display, reminding fans of their title-winning dominance from last season.

The semi-final against Shillong Lajong was a tense affair. Redeem Tlang, a Shillong-born player, scored the decisive goal with a stunning long-range strike to seal a 1-0 win. Goalkeeper Arman Tamang’s heroics ensured their place in the final.

The Road Ahead

Now, NEUFC face debutants Diamond Harbour FC, who stunned East Bengal FC in the other semi-final. For the Highlanders, victory would mean back-to-back Durand Cup titles and cementing their place in the legacy of Asia’s oldest football tournament.

From dominance in 2024 to grit and determination in 2025, NorthEast United FC’s journey reflects a team that has finally embraced its potential—and refuses to let go of its place at the top.
