New Delhi : Signing of Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with THDC (Tehri Hydro Development Corporation) India Limited for 400 MW Hydro Powerin pursuit of Net Zero Carbon Emissions
In a significant stride toward achieving Indian Railways’ vision of becoming a “Net Zero” carbon emitter by 2030, Northern Railway has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with THDC India Limited (THDCIL) for the procurement of 400 MW of hydroelectric power. The agreement was formally signed on 31st July 2025 between AshishMehrotra, CEDE/NR and R.K. Verma, Additional General Manager (Commercial), THDCIL at Rishikesh.
This strategic initiative reinforces Indian Railways’ unwavering commitment to sustainability and aligns closely with India’s climate action goals outlined under the “Panchamrit”—the five nectar elements announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at COP26 in Glasgow under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
With this vision, Northern Railway has already tied up621 MW of renewable power through various Renewable Energy Project Developers. The newly signed PPA with THDCIL further strengthens this trajectory, ensuring a steady and cost-effective supply of green power to the Indian Railways and supporting its decarbonization strategy.
The 400 MW hydro power will be sourced from Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project (1200 MW) located in Arunachal Pradesh.
