Steve Smith Shocks Cricket World with ODI Retirement Announcement

New Delhi : Stand-in Australian captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), bringing an end to his illustrious 170-match career for the national team. The decision comes just a day after Australia’s exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, marking the conclusion of a remarkable journey that included two World Cup victories.

Smith, who led an Australian side missing several first-choice players, managed to guide the team to the semi-finals despite an inexperienced bowling attack. However, they fell short against India, who delivered a dominant performance to secure a spot in the final in Dubai. Reflecting on his ODI career, Smith expressed gratitude for his time in the format.

“It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a statement.

The 35-year-old explained that his decision was influenced by his long-term vision for Australian cricket, acknowledging that he did not see himself playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He believes that now is the right time for the team to start rebuilding and preparing for the next major 50-over tournament, while he shifts his focus to Test cricket.

“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, so it feels like the right time to make way,” Smith stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the longest format of the game, citing upcoming assignments, including the World Test Championship final, a Test series against the West Indies in the winter, and an Ashes series against England at home.

“Test cricket remains a priority, and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter, and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage,” he added.

Smith, who played a key role in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023, highlighted these victories as the most cherished moments of his ODI career.

“There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”
