Visakhapatnam August 4 2024 : On Sunday, a significant fire erupted in the AC coaches of the Korba-Visakhapatnam Express at platform number 4 of Visakhapatnam railway station, Andhra Pradesh. The train, which arrived at 7:30 am and was scheduled to depart for Tirupati at 2 pm, caught fire around 10 am, resulting in the complete destruction of three coaches.
The blaze initially started in one of the AC coaches and quickly spread to the B6, B7, and M1 coaches. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities. Fire Services and railway police teams swiftly responded, managing to control the flames.
Saurabh Prasad, Waltair Division DRM, explained the situation: “This empty rake was supposed to go to the coaching depot for maintenance. It was stationed at the platform when, at 9:20 am, an RPF staff member noticed smoke and alerted the fire brigade. The fire was doused by 11:10 am, and the adjacent coaches were evacuated to the coaching depot as per protocol.”
Visakhapatnam CP Shanka Brata Bagchi added, “Four bogies of the Tirumala Express caught fire while stationary at the Vizag railway station. Fortunately, there were no passengers inside, so no injuries occurred. Local fire services responded immediately, and we are registering an FIR. Forensic experts have been called to determine the cause of the fire.”
An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire, whether it was due to a short circuit or another reason. Train services on the route have been partially affected due to the incident.
