Legendary Bharatanatyam Dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy Passes Away at 84

Padma Vibhushan Awardee's Death Marks a Great Loss to the World of Classical Dance.

New Delhi, August 4, 2024: Renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy passed away at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday. The Padma Vibhushan awardee had been battling age-related illnesses for an extended period. She was 84 years old.

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed his sorrow over Krishnamurthy’s death and extended his condolences to her family. He paid tribute to the esteemed dancer, recognizing her significant contributions to Indian classical dance.

The Sangeet Natak Academy also mourned her loss, stating, “The Sangeet Natak Academy and its associate organizations express deep condolences on the demise of Bharatanatyam’s leading artist, Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Academy, and Padma Vibhushan awardee Yamini Krishnamurthy. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and fans, and prayers to God to give them strength to bear this irreparable loss.” Krishnamurthy’s remains will be taken to the Yamini School of Dance in Hauz Khas on Sunday, with details of her final rites yet to be announced.
