Cloudburst Closes Srinagar-Ladakh Highway, Wreaks Havoc in Ganderbal

Srinagar, August 4, 2024: The Srinagar-Ladakh highway has been closed to traffic following mudslides triggered by a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The cloudburst struck the Kawcherwan Kangan area, leading to significant road blockages and damage to paddy fields.

Officials reported that the cloudburst caused several mudslides, which not only obstructed the highway but also trapped several vehicles in the debris. Additionally, homes in the affected area were inundated with water, resulting in property damage. Despite these disruptions, no casualties have been reported.

A canal near Padawbal has overflowed, further complicating the situation by contributing to the accumulation of mud on the road. The Jammu and Kashmir traffic police confirmed the blockage of the Srinagar-Kargil road on social media platform X.

Local residents noted that the cloudbursts also impacted several villages, including Kawcharwan, Cherwa, and Padabal, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and crops. Authorities have deployed personnel and machinery to clear the debris and restore traffic on the Srinagar-Ladakh highway.
