“VIRAASAT” Exhibition Kicks Off in Delhi to Celebrate 10th National Handloom Day

Exhibition Features Handloom Masterpieces, Workshops, and Cultural Events Until August 16

New Delhi, August 4, 2024: The “VIRAASAT” exhibition, marking the 10th National Handloom Day, commenced at Handloom Haat in Janpath on August 3, 2024. Organized by the National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the exhibition will run until August 16, 2024.

This year’s event continues the celebrations from previous years, focusing on India’s rich handloom tradition and offering a platform for weavers and artisans. The exhibition, open daily from 11 am to 8 pm, features handloom products from various exotic locations across India.

Highlights of the exhibition include 75 stalls showcasing handloom weavers and artisans’ products, curated displays of exquisite Indian handlooms, workshops on natural dyes, kasturi cotton, and design, live loom demonstrations, folk dances, and regional cuisines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently praised the handloom artisans’ contributions during his Mann ki Baat broadcast, emphasizing their success and urging people to share photos of local products on social media with the hashtag #MyProductMyPride.

The National Handloom Day, celebrated annually on August 7, commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which promoted indigenous industries and handloom weaving. The first National Handloom Day was observed in 2015 in Chennai, aiming to honor handloom weavers and highlight their socio-economic impact. The handloom sector employs around 35 lakh people, making it a significant contributor to India’s cultural heritage and economy. The government continues to support this sector through various schemes to ensure sustainable development, high-quality production, and environmental responsibility.
