Dehradun, November 3, 2025 – The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in Dehradun today on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the formation of the state of Uttarakhand.
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu described legislative assemblies as a vital pillar of India’s parliamentary democracy, highlighting their role in ensuring constant public accountability. Citing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, she said that the framers of the Constitution gave importance to continuous accountability by choosing the parliamentary system, which she termed both a strength and a challenge of democracy.
The President emphasised that legislators serve as the most important link between the government and the public. She said it is a great privilege for elected representatives to directly connect with citizens and work for their welfare at the grassroots level. If MLAs remain actively engaged in solving people’s problems, she added, the bond of trust between them and their constituents will remain strong and unbreakable.
Urging the members of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly to pursue development and public welfare with dedication, President Murmu said that such work transcends party politics. She advised legislators to show special sensitivity toward the underprivileged sections of society and to focus on creating opportunities for the younger generation.
Referring to Article 44 of the Constitution, the President appreciated the Assembly for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in accordance with the constitutional directive. She also commended the House for passing over 550 bills, including the Uttarakhand Lokayukta Bill, Uttarakhand Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Bill, and the Anti-Copying Bill, describing them as measures inspired by transparency, morality, and social justice.
Praising the state’s progress over the last 25 years, President Murmu said that Uttarakhand has made commendable advancements in environment, energy, tourism, healthcare, and education, along with notable improvements in physical and digital connectivity and infrastructure. She urged that the state must continue its development journey while preserving its rich natural heritage and ecological balance.
Concluding her address, the President expressed confidence that with the spirit of ‘Nation First,’ the members of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly will continue to advance the state and the nation toward rapid and inclusive development.
