India’s women’s cricket team made history by winning their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final held at Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
Openers Shafali Verma (87) and Smriti Mandhana (45) built a strong start, while Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 58 lifted India to an imposing 298 for seven. In reply, Deepti Sharma’s stellar spell of 5 for 39 helped restrict South Africa to 246 despite Laura Wolvaardt’s brilliant 101.
The landmark victory ended India’s 20-year wait for the trophy and sparked nationwide celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several sports icons and celebrities, hailed the team’s achievement. The BCCI announced a ₹51-crore prize pool to honor the champions.
