New Delhi– The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India successfully concluded its third Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for 2025-26, with 74 university-level students from 21 States and Union Territories completing the two-week programme. Inaugurated on 22nd August 2025 by Bharat Lal, Secretary General of NHRC, the internship offered students an opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of human rights issues and the workings of the Commission.
Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, Member of NHRC, addressed the valedictory session as the Chief Guest and congratulated the interns for their dedication throughout the programme. She highlighted the Commission’s ongoing efforts in areas such as women’s rights, child protection, custodial justice, mental health, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. She encouraged the students to use their learning to advocate for justice, defend human dignity, and uphold constitutional values in both personal and professional spheres.
During the internship, participants attended sessions conducted by experts in diverse fields including psychology, forensic science, and business and human rights. They also participated in virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Jail, Delhi Police Stations, and Asha Kiran Shelter Home, which provided practical insights into government mechanisms for protecting human rights. The interns were introduced to the realities on the ground and the steps necessary to safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations. Awards were also announced for the book review, group research project presentation, and declamation competitions held during the programme.
Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary of NHRC, presented the internship report, while Samir Kumar, Joint Secretary, and Lt Col Virender Singh, Director, NHRC were also present during the valedictory session. The OSTI programme aimed to equip students from varied academic backgrounds with tools to understand, analyze, and address key human rights challenges, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning and interactive discussions on both domestic and international human rights issues.
