New Delhi, October 29, 2025: In a significant step toward strengthening regional energy cooperation, India and Nepal have signed key agreements to boost power connectivity between the two nations. Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, H.E. Kulman Ghising, met with India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, in New Delhi today to review the progress of bilateral projects and discuss new opportunities for collaboration.
During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing joint initiatives in hydropower development and cross-border electricity trade, with an emphasis on clean and sustainable energy solutions.
A major highlight of the visit was the signing of Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements (JV&SHA) between POWERGRID, India’s Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The agreements pave the way for the creation of two joint venture entities — one each in India and Nepal — to oversee the construction and operation of high-capacity cross-border power transmission systems.
The two proposed transmission corridors —
Inaruwa (Nepal) – New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit Link, and
Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal) – Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit Link —
will significantly enhance the exchange of electricity between the neighboring countries.
These projects are expected to improve grid reliability, strengthen energy security, and promote long-term economic growth by supporting the seamless flow of clean power across borders.
The meeting marks another milestone in India–Nepal relations, underscoring the shared vision of both nations to build a regional green energy network and foster deeper integration through sustainable infrastructure development.
