Cannes, France, May 21, 2025: Celebrated Indian actress and global fashion icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a grand and graceful appearance at the prestigious 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2025. Representing global beauty brand L’Oréal Paris as their long-time ambassador, Aishwarya walked the red carpet for the screening of the film The History of Sound. Staying true to her cultural roots, she appeared in an exquisite ivory saree, adorned with traditional Indian jewelry and a prominent application of sindoor on her forehead, symbolizing her commitment to Indian traditions while standing tall on an international platform.
This year marks her 22nd appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, a journey that began in 2002 with the premiere of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. Over the years, Aishwarya has not only become a constant and eagerly awaited presence on the Cannes red carpet, but she has also grown to be a global ambassador of Indian beauty, fashion, and cinema. Her 2025 appearance was no different — she captivated photographers and fans alike with her elegance, offering warm gestures like a traditional namaste and blowing flying kisses to her admirers. Her outfit, featuring a flowing lace train on one side and a long pallu draped gracefully on the other, received widespread admiration across media and social platforms.
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 also witnessed a significant presence of Indian cinema and talent. Director Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-anticipated film Homebound was screened under the “Un Certain Regard” section and received a nine-minute standing ovation. The film features performances by Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The cast walked the red carpet and also attended the official photocall event, marking a proud moment for Indian filmmaking.
Additionally, cinematic legend Satyajit Ray’s classic Aranyer Din Ratri was presented as part of the Cannes Classics section. The restored version was introduced by acclaimed director Wes Anderson and was attended by veteran actors Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, both of whom starred in the film. The screening was met with an enthusiastic standing ovation, celebrating the timeless brilliance of Indian cinema.
Adding to the nation’s prestige, filmmaker Payal Kapadia was selected as a member of the main competition jury. Her presence at Cannes follows her historic win of the Grand Prix in 2024 for her debut feature All We Imagine As Light, an Indo-French co-production.
Overall, Cannes 2025 has proven to be a powerful platform for celebrating Indian cinema, heritage, and artistry on a global scale.
