Washington, August 18, 2026; US President Donald Trump has recognised 16-year-old California lifeguard Ryder Williams for his quick response in rescuing a 10-year-old Indian American boy from dangerous ocean waters.
Williams met Trump at the White House along with the rescued boy, Nathaniel Rai, and their families. The President praised the teenager for acting decisively when Rai was swept into the surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz.
The incident occurred on July 25 when strong waves dragged Rai into the water while Williams was on lifeguard duty. Williams immediately moved toward the boy and, with assistance from another lifeguard, helped bring him safely back to the shore.
Footage of the dramatic rescue was recorded and later gained widespread attention online. The incident eventually reached the White House, leading to Williams’ meeting with Trump.
During the meeting, Trump described the rescue as an extraordinary act and said the teenager’s courage could inspire other young Americans.
Williams, who hopes to pursue a career as a firefighter, credited his lifeguard training for helping him remain focused during the emergency. He said his training taught him to respond effectively in dangerous situations.
The teenager also urged people to remain alert to those around them and step forward whenever someone needs assistance.
Rai’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed deep gratitude to Williams for protecting his son. The meeting also prompted Trump to highlight the vital role played by lifeguards, noting that their contribution often receives less recognition than it deserves.
