Prime Minister Says Mookerjee's Vision Continues to Guide India's Journey Towards Viksit Bharat

New Delhi, July 6, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tributes to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, describing him as one of India’s foremost nation-builders whose ideals continue to inspire the country’s progress towards a developed India.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister praised Dr Mookerjee’s scholarship, courage and unwavering commitment to national service, saying his contributions across education, industry and national integration have left a lasting impact on the country.

PM Highlights Mookerjee’s Contribution to Nation Building

Prime Minister Modi said Dr Mookerjee devoted his life to strengthening India’s unity, dignity and development. He described him as an eminent thinker and educationist who promoted innovation and modern learning while making significant contributions to nation-building.

The Prime Minister also recalled Dr Mookerjee’s tenure as the country’s first Industries Minister, crediting him with laying the foundation for industrial self-reliance while ensuring the growth of traditional sectors and safeguarding livelihoods.

Modi further highlighted Dr Mookerjee’s humanitarian efforts during the Bengal Famine, stating that his compassion and dedication to public service reflected his deep concern for people facing hardship.

Emphasising his legacy, the Prime Minister said Dr Mookerjee’s commitment to India’s unity and integrity continues to inspire generations and remains relevant as the country advances towards the vision of Viksit Bharat.

BJP Leaders Hold Commemorative Programmes

On the occasion, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Delhi organised a commemorative event and offered floral tributes to Dr Mookerjee’s portrait.

Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, along with several senior party leaders, participated in the programme to honour the Jana Sangh founder’s contributions.

Tributes Paid in Rajasthan and Haryana

In Rajasthan, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma paid floral tributes to Dr Mookerjee at the Chief Minister’s residence in Jaipur.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini remembered Dr Mookerjee during a programme at Ekta Sthal in Madhopur ahead of the birth anniversary celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, Saini said Dr Mookerjee firmly believed that India should have one Constitution, one legislature and one national leadership, describing these principles as essential to national unity rather than mere political slogans.

He also said Dr Mookerjee always placed the nation’s interests above personal power or position and envisioned a united India.

Legacy of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee was an educationist, parliamentarian, statesman and humanitarian. He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951, which later became the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He inherited a strong academic and nationalist legacy from his father, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee, who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and as a judge of the Calcutta High Court.

Dr Mookerjee also served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s Interim Government before resigning from the Cabinet. Earlier, he had served as acting president of the Hindu Mahasabha and advocated complete independence for India.

The BJP annually observes June 23 as ‘Balidan Diwas’ to commemorate Dr Mookerjee’s death in Kashmir in 1953.
