Delhi Launches Heritage Conservation Drive as Private Institutions Invited to Adopt 75 Monuments

The move is also expected to boost heritage tourism by improving visitor facilities and enhancing the overall experience at historical locations.

New Delhi, July 1, 2026: The Delhi Government has approved two new heritage conservation schemes under the ‘Our Monuments, Our Pride’ initiative, allowing private organisations, trusts and other institutions to participate in the preservation of the city’s historical landmarks.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the initiative will enable eligible private companies, public sector undertakings (PSUs), NGOs and foundations to adopt 75 monuments across the national capital as “Monument Friends” for a period of five years.

The programme aims to strengthen heritage conservation efforts through public participation while transforming historical sites into vibrant centres of culture and tourism. Under the scheme, selected institutions will receive financial assistance of up to ₹2 crore for essential restoration and conservation work.

Highlighting the importance of protecting Delhi’s historical identity, Chief Minister Gupta said that every generation has experienced the city’s monuments differently. While some people have learned about these landmarks through books, others have witnessed their grandeur personally.

She emphasised that preserving heritage is a shared responsibility and that the initiative seeks to ensure that Delhi’s historical treasures remain protected for future generations.

The Delhi Cabinet has cleared the proposal under which private entities will collaborate with the government in maintaining and improving heritage sites. The adopted monuments will receive support for conservation, upkeep and development of facilities that can encourage tourism and public engagement.

The government stated that the scheme is designed to promote a balance between development and heritage preservation. Through active participation from citizens, institutions and organisations, the campaign aims to create greater awareness about Delhi’s cultural legacy.

The move is also expected to boost heritage tourism by improving visitor facilities and enhancing the overall experience at historical locations. Authorities believe that better conservation of monuments will help strengthen Delhi’s position as a global cultural destination.

The initiative aligns with the broader national approach towards heritage preservation, including the Centre’s ‘Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan’ programme, which focuses on developing tourism facilities at important historical sites through collaboration between government bodies and stakeholders.

Delhi, known for its centuries-old architecture and monuments representing different eras of Indian history, has long faced challenges related to conservation and maintenance. The new schemes are expected to provide additional resources and expertise for protecting these landmarks.

With the involvement of private institutions and public participation, the Delhi Government aims to ensure that its monuments are not only preserved but also become active spaces that connect people with the city’s history, culture and identity.
