Victoria.29 June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Seychelles’ Independence as the Guest of Honour at the invitation of Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie. He became the first Indian Prime Minister to participate in Seychelles’ Independence Day celebrations.
The landmark occasion also coincided with the completion of 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, highlighting the strong friendship and strategic partnership shared by the two nations.
During the golden jubilee celebrations, Indian armed forces contingents participated in the national parade organised to mark Seychelles’ historic milestone. The Indian contingent included personnel from the Assam Rifles, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Navy Marching Band, showcasing the deep-rooted defence cooperation between the two countries.
As part of the commemorative events and in line with longstanding maritime traditions, Indian Naval Ships Tarkash and Ikshak arrived at Port Victoria. Their presence reflected India’s commitment towards strengthening maritime security cooperation and regional partnership in the Indian Ocean region.
Prime Minister Modi’s participation underlined the importance India places on its relationship with Seychelles. The two countries share close cooperation in areas including defence, maritime security, development partnership, capacity building, and people-to-people connections.
The visit further reinforced India’s vision of enhancing engagement with island nations and promoting collective growth, stability, and prosperity in the region. The celebrations served as a reminder of the enduring bonds between India and Seychelles built over five decades of diplomatic partnership.
