New Delhi, June 8: Senior leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc met in the national capital on Sunday to deliberate on future political strategy and strengthen coordination among alliance partners ahead of upcoming political challenges.

The meeting was attended by several prominent leaders, including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray participated virtually, while party leader Sanjay Raut reiterated the party’s commitment to the INDIA alliance. He said opposition parties must remain united to effectively challenge the BJP and address issues facing the country.

In his opening remarks, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the opposition’s coordinated efforts in Parliament, referring to the alliance’s joint stand on key legislative issues. He urged alliance partners to carry forward the spirit of unity in addressing political, economic and social concerns facing the nation.

The meeting comes at a time when the opposition coalition is facing internal strains, with some constituent parties expressing differences over regional political developments and alliance strategies. Despite these challenges, Congress leaders sought to project a message of unity, asserting that a large number of opposition parties continue to support the alliance’s broader objective of presenting a collective alternative to the BJP.

Notably, the DMK chose to stay away from the meeting following disagreements with the Congress over political developments in Tamil Nadu. Reports also suggest concerns within some other alliance partners regarding state-specific political issues and seat-sharing arrangements.

However, opposition leaders participating in the meeting emphasized the importance of maintaining coordination on national issues and strengthening cooperation among like-minded parties.

The gathering is being viewed as an important attempt by the INDIA bloc to reinforce unity and chart its future course as opposition parties prepare for upcoming electoral and parliamentary battles.
