Ahmedabad, May 24, 2026: Ahmedabad emerged as the centre of nationwide Commonwealth Games Day celebrations as the 75th edition of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative brought together thousands of participants across more than 8,000 locations nationwide. The event also helped build momentum towards the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which India is set to host in Ahmedabad.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, led the celebrations at the Sabarmati Riverfront alongside Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi and actor Ayushmann Khurrana.
Around 5,000 cyclists, athletes, youth volunteers and fitness enthusiasts participated in a 5-kilometre cycling rally themed “A New Icon for a Fitter India – Pedalling to 2030.” The event also featured yoga and Zumba demonstrations, creating a vibrant atmosphere focused on health and fitness.
A key attraction was the inauguration of a Commonwealth Games-themed exhibition by Dr. Mandaviya. The exhibition highlighted India’s sporting achievements, sports infrastructure development under the Khelo India Mission and the country’s expanding sports ecosystem ahead of the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.
Participants also enjoyed activities such as pickleball, box cricket, volleyball, tug of war and several community games.
Several renowned athletes and Commonwealth Games medallists attended the event, including Gurjit Kaur, Anjum Moudgil, Ankur Mittal and Trupti Murgunde.
The programme also saw the participation of Olympic medallist Gagan Narang and Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla.
Addressing participants, Dr. Mandaviya said a fit society is essential for building a prosperous nation and achieving the vision of a developed India.
He described cycling as more than just exercise, stating that it helps improve health, reduce pollution and save fuel while supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for lower fuel consumption.
Ayushmann Khurrana highlighted the importance of creating a strong sporting culture among young Indians. He said initiatives like Sundays on Cycle inspire children and encourage them to embrace fitness and sports from an early age.
The actor added that sports teach discipline, sacrifice and aspiration, while helping shape future champions for the country.
Similar events were organised simultaneously at Sports Authority of India centres, National Centres of Excellence, Khelo India Centres and public venues across the country.
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse led celebrations in Guwahati, while former wrestler Babita Phogat participated in Dharamsala. Former hockey player Saba Anjum joined celebrations in Mumbai.
Since its launch in December 2024 under the Fit India Movement, Sundays on Cycle has grown into one of India’s largest community fitness initiatives. The programme has reached over 3.07 lakh locations, engaged more than 50 lakh cyclists and connected with over seven crore people through physical and digital participation.
The initiative is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India, Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation, MY Bikes and MY Bharat..
