Bihar Heatwave: Patna and Arwal Reduce School Hours as Temperatures Cross 40°C

Patna and Arwal administrations have curtailed school timings and suspended classes for younger students until May 26 due to severe heatwave conditions and rising temperatures in Bihar.

Patna, May 22, 2026: In response to the severe heatwave sweeping across Bihar, authorities in Patna and Arwal districts have introduced temporary restrictions on school operations to protect students from extreme weather conditions.

With daytime temperatures crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark in several parts of the State, district administrations have revised school schedules and suspended classes for younger children.

Patna District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S.M. has directed all government and private educational institutions, including pre-schools and Anganwadi centres, to halt academic activities for students up to Class 5 until May 26. The order has been issued as a precautionary measure amid persistent high temperatures and heat-related health concerns.

Revised Timings for Senior Classes

The administration has also imposed restrictions on classes for students in higher grades. Under the revised schedule, academic sessions for Classes 6 to 8 will be allowed only up to 10:30 a.m. to minimize students’ exposure to intense afternoon heat.

Officials said the decision was taken after reviewing weather conditions and forecasts that indicate continued heatwave-like conditions across the region.

Authorities Issue Safety Advisory

District officials in both Patna and Arwal have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure children are not exposed to direct sunlight during peak daytime hours. Residents have also been advised to maintain adequate hydration and follow health precautions recommended during extreme heat conditions.

Heatwave Continues Across Bihar

Large parts of Bihar have been experiencing unusually high temperatures over the past several days, prompting authorities to take preventive measures in schools and public institutions. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and may take further steps depending on weather developments in the coming days.

Officials emphasized that safeguarding the health and well-being of students remains the top priority as the State grapples with the ongoing spell of intense summer heat.
