Delhi to restart e rickshaw registrations from May 15 with new rule

New Delhi, May 13, 2026: The Delhi government will resume e rickshaw registrations from May 15 after a suspension that began in November last year, introducing a stricter regulatory framework aimed at curbing unauthorised vehicles and improving compliance in the sector.

According to the Delhi Transport Department, the online system for issuing training certificates and processing registrations will be reopened, allowing applicants to once again apply for permits under updated guidelines.

A key change in the revised policy is the restriction that only one e rickshaw can be registered under a single licence holder. Officials said this step is intended to prevent misuse of registrations, where multiple vehicles were previously registered under one name and later operated by different individuals without proper regulation.

The new framework also makes it mandatory for drivers to complete a 10 day training programme at designated centres before they can receive certification and registration approval. Authorities said this is aimed at improving safety standards and operational discipline among drivers.

However, the one vehicle rule will not apply to registered transport companies or operators running e carts within institutional premises, where multiple vehicle registrations will still be allowed.

Officials also said that a review mechanism is being developed to identify cases where individuals already own multiple registered e rickshaws. Such cases may be examined during annual fitness checks, and action could include cancellation where violations are found.

Transport officials further stated that the broader draft e rickshaw policy seeks to regulate fleet size, rationalise distribution across Delhi, and introduce route based deployment depending on traffic demand and local requirements.

Industry representatives welcomed the decision to reopen registrations, stating that the earlier suspension had affected both drivers and dealers and that the restart would help stabilise operations in the electric mobility segment.
