Kolkata, May 9: Starbucks has reinforced its confidence in India’s fast-growing coffee market by launching its first Reserve store in eastern India, choosing Kolkata as the destination for the premium café experience. The new outlet marks the company’s fourth Reserve store in the country and signals its aggressive long-term expansion plans despite ongoing global economic uncertainties.
The premium cafe has been opened through the Tata Starbucks joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks India. Company executives said India continues to remain one of the most promising growth markets for the brand, especially as urban consumers increasingly embrace café culture and premium lifestyle experiences.
Starbucks India Chief Operating Officer Adrit Mishra said the company remains highly optimistic about the country’s future potential. According to him, India’s coffee market is still underpenetrated, leaving major room for expansion across metro cities as well as emerging urban centres.
The newly launched Reserve store in Kolkata is designed to offer a more elevated coffee experience compared to regular Starbucks outlets. Reserve stores typically feature small-batch premium coffees, artisanal brewing methods and curated interiors aimed at customers seeking a luxury cafe environment.
Industry experts believe India’s growing young population, rising disposable incomes and changing social habits are driving the rapid rise of cafe culture. Coffee chains are increasingly competing to attract consumers who view cafés not just as beverage spots, but also as workspaces, social hubs and lifestyle destinations.
Over the past few years, Starbucks has steadily expanded its footprint across India. The company now operates more than 500 stores nationwide, reflecting the increasing demand for premium coffee experiences in major cities. The eastern India expansion is expected to further strengthen the brand’s presence in regions where organised cafe chains are still developing.
The launch in Kolkata also highlights how global brands are increasingly focusing on tier-one and culturally rich cities outside the traditional business hubs of Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Analysts say Kolkata’s evolving urban consumer base and appreciation for heritage dining experiences make it a strong location for premium café formats.
Despite concerns around inflation and global economic slowdowns, Starbucks appears confident that India’s long-term consumption story remains intact. The company’s investment in high-end store formats indicates that premium consumer spending continues to grow steadily in the country.
With competition intensifying in India’s cafe industry, Starbucks’ latest move could further accelerate the shift toward premium coffee consumption and experiential dining among younger Indian consumers.
