Faridabad : On May 08, 2026, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University organised a special interactive session on the theme “Law, Media and the Space Between.” The objective of the programme was to create awareness among students regarding the growing relationship between law and media, the role of media in a democratic system, and the emerging dimensions of legal journalism. The event brought together eminent journalists, legal editors, and media experts from across the country, who shared their valuable experiences and insights with the students.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. The event was organised under the patronage and guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Devinder Singh, while the gracious presence of Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Mishra added significance to the occasion. Through this initiative, the University administration provided students with an important platform to understand the interrelationship between law and media.
In his address, Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Mishra stated that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University is a national-level law university where students from various states across the country come to pursue legal education. He emphasized that the University is not confined merely to imparting legal education but also continuously organises academic and interactive programmes aimed at the holistic development of students, strengthening their understanding of constitutional values, and enhancing awareness about contemporary issues. He further remarked that developing a better understanding between law and media is the need of the hour, as both are strong pillars of democracy. Such programmes provide students with valuable opportunities to develop legal knowledge along with communication, analytical, and expressive skills.

The distinguished speakers included senior journalists and legal experts Mr. Sandeep Phukan, Mr. Pawan Sharma, Mr. Satya Prakash, Mr. Jatin Gandhi, Mr. Sat Singh, Mr. Neeraj Mohan, and Mr. Mukesh Tondon. The speakers shared their views on themes such as “From Courtroom to Column,” “Legal Writing,” “Interface Between Law and Media,” and “Media Law Writing.”
In his address, senior legal editor Mr. Satya Prakash highlighted the crucial role of free media in a democracy. He stated that while the judiciary seeks truth, the media acts as the watchdog of democracy and serves as a bridge between the State and society. He stressed the importance of judicial accountability, media freedom, and fair reporting of sensitive issues.
Mr. Jatin Gandhi explained the distinction between media and journalism, observing that advertisement-driven media systems today significantly influence news priorities. He emphasized the importance of ethics, fact-checking, and freedom of expression in journalism. He also described the “5Ws and 1H” method of news writing as an important tool for students interested in journalism.
Mr. Sandeep Phukan underlined the need to simplify legal language for ordinary citizens. He stated that true democratic awareness develops only when laws and rights are communicated to society in simple and accessible language.
After the break, Mr. Neeraj Mohan discussed the gap between law and society and highlighted the role of media in bridging this divide. He encouraged students interested in legal journalism to cultivate the habit of reading newspaper editorials and to remain persistent in their writing efforts while seeking guidance from teachers.
Mr. Sat Singh spoke about the expanding scope of legal reporting and emphasized that criticism is an essential part of journalism. He further highlighted the importance of professional ethics in both law and journalism.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Mukesh Tondon stated that both lawyers and journalists continue learning throughout their professional lives. He described journalism as a challenging profession and stressed the importance of legal awareness for responsible and accurate reporting.
The interactive question-and-answer session remained one of the most engaging parts of the programme, where students raised queries regarding legal journalism, internships, media ethics, and the future of digital media. The programme concluded with the felicitation of the guests.
Overall, the event proved to be highly informative, inspiring, and meaningful, providing students with an effective platform to understand the deep relationship between law, media, and democracy.
