Kolkata, May 9: In a unique blend of politics and local culture, Bengal’s beloved street snack ‘jhalmuri’ emerged as one of the biggest highlights during the oath-taking ceremony of the State’s first BJP-led government in Kolkata on Saturday.
The grand event, held at the historic Brigade Parade Ground, witnessed thousands of supporters, party workers and visitors gathering to witness the swearing-in ceremony. Amid the political celebrations, stalls serving freshly prepared jhalmuri became a major attraction across the venue.
The State BJP reportedly arranged nearly 20 dedicated jhalmuri counters inside the ceremony premises, while several local vendors outside the ground also saw heavy crowds throughout the day. From party workers waving flags to families attending the historic event, many were seen enjoying the spicy puffed rice snack that has long been associated with Kolkata’s street culture.
Interestingly, jhalmuri had also become an unexpected talking point during the recently concluded election campaign, often symbolising Bengal’s local identity in the heated political battle between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. Its appearance at the swearing-in event added a cultural touch to an otherwise formal political occasion.
Vendors at the venue said business remained brisk from the morning itself as supporters continued pouring into central Kolkata. Many attendees described the snack as the “perfect Bengal flavour” for the historic day.
The atmosphere at the ceremony remained festive, with cultural pride clearly visible alongside political celebrations. As slogans echoed across the grounds and leaders addressed supporters, the humble jhalmuri quietly became one of the most memorable symbols of the day’s celebrations in West Bengal.
