Delhi CM Race: BJP’s Choice Still Under Wraps, Legislative Party Meeting Yet to Be Scheduled

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to announce its pick for the Chief Minister of Delhi after the party’s resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections held on February 5, 2025. The Election Commission declared BJP’s landslide win on Saturday, setting the stage for government formation. However, suspense continues over who will lead the new government, with no official announcement regarding the CM candidate.

There has been significant speculation about the choice of the next Chief Minister, with reports suggesting that the BJP might opt for a first-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the top post. Sources close to the party indicate that the oath-taking ceremony will likely take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his scheduled trip to the United States.

Several names are circulating as potential candidates for the role of the first BJP Chief Minister of Delhi since Sushma Swaraj held the position in 1998. Among the frontrunners are Parvesh Verma, the Member of Parliament for West Delhi; Virender Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP president; Vijender Gupta, a senior party leader; and Mohan Singh Bisht, the newly elected MLA from Mustafabad. Each of these leaders has a strong political presence in the city, with their own strengths and support bases, which could make the decision more challenging for the party.

The announcement of the CM candidate comes after the resignation of outgoing Minister Atishi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Atishi, who was defeated in the elections, stepped down following her party’s defeat, clearing the way for the formation of a new government. Her resignation marked the end of AAP’s rule in Delhi, which had been in power since 2015.

Amid the political uncertainty, the Congress party, despite being a minor player in the Delhi elections, continues to project unity within the opposition INDIA alliance. Senior Congress leader Rajiv Shukla reiterated that the alliance remains united and will collectively strategize for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The unity of the opposition parties will be crucial as they gear up for the national elections, with the BJP’s landslide victory in Delhi expected to influence the political dynamics in the run-up to the general elections.

The suspense surrounding the CM pick and the delayed announcement of the oath-taking ceremony reflect the high stakes in this election, as the BJP looks to consolidate its hold on power in the capital. With the political landscape in Delhi shifting dramatically, all eyes remain on the BJP’s next move in the capital.
