Coimbatore : A shocking incident unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on Thursday when a pregnant woman was thrown out of a moving train after resisting a rape attempt. The victim, identified as Revathi (36), was traveling alone from Tiruppur to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh on the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express when the horrific assault occurred around 10:30 AM.
According to officials, Revathi had boarded the train at 6:40 AM with an unreserved ticket and was seated in the ladies’ coach along with at least seven other women. As the train reached Jolarpettai Railway Station at 10:15 AM, the other passengers disembarked, leaving her alone in the compartment. Seizing the opportunity, the accused, identified as Hemaraj (27), boarded the coach and initially sat quietly. Moments later, noticing that Revathi was alone, he attempted to sexually assault her.
When the woman resisted by kicking the attacker, he reacted violently and threw her out of the moving train. The victim suffered severe injuries to her head, hands, and legs and was left on the railway tracks in critical condition. Railway officials and passersby immediately alerted the authorities, and she was rushed to Vellore Government Hospital for treatment.
Revathi was reportedly on her way to her mother’s house when the brutal attack took place. The Railway Police acted swiftly, registering a case based on her statement. Within hours, the accused Hemaraj was tracked down and arrested. Investigations revealed that he is a habitual offender with a long history of criminal activities, including a previous rape attempt, murder, and robbery. He had been arrested earlier but was out on bail when he committed this crime.
The incident has sparked outrage among passengers and women’s rights activists, who have demanded stricter security measures in train coaches reserved for women. Questions are being raised over the lack of security personnel in ladies’ compartments, especially during long-distance travel. Many have called for better surveillance, stricter punishments for repeat offenders, and increased railway security to ensure passenger safety.
Railway authorities have assured a thorough investigation and are reviewing security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future. The case is now under fast-track investigation, with officials ensuring that the accused faces the strictest legal action.
