Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraddha Paksha or Mahalaya Paksha, is a 15-day period observed in the Hindu calendar to remember and pay homage to departed ancestors. Families traditionally mark the period through Shraddha rituals, Tarpan, food offerings, prayers and acts of charity.

According to the information cited by Drik Panchang, Pitru Paksha 2026 will begin on September 27 and conclude with Sarva Pitru Amavasya on October 10.

The observance follows Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha, which falls on September 26. During the fortnight, families generally perform ancestral rituals according to the lunar Tithi associated with the death of a particular ancestor.

When to perform Shraddha

Shraddha is traditionally performed on the Tithi corresponding to the death anniversary of an ancestor. The daily observances extend from Pratipada through Amavasya.

The principal period for carrying out the rituals generally includes Kutup Muhurat, Rohina Muhurat and Aparahna Kaal. For September 27, Drik Panchang lists the Kutup Muhurat from 11:58 am to 12:46 pm for Kukshi, Madhya Pradesh.

As ritual timings can vary according to location, families are advised to check the applicable local Tithi and Muhurat before conducting the ceremonies.

What families do during Pitru Paksha

The fortnight is centred on remembrance and gratitude towards ancestors. Traditional practices can vary across communities and regions.

Among the commonly observed rituals are Tarpan, in which water and black sesame may be offered according to family tradition, and Pinda Daan, involving the preparation and offering of pindas.

Families may also prepare food as an offering, conduct a traditional Brahmin Bhoj, donate food, clothes or other useful items and spend time in prayer and remembrance of deceased family members.

In parts of Bengal, Odisha and Assam, Tarpan using water and sesame seeds is an important practice associated with ancestral remembrance.

Importance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya

October 10, 2026, marking Sarva Pitru Amavasya, holds particular significance during the observance. It provides an opportunity to perform collective Shraddha for ancestors, especially when the exact death Tithi of an ancestor is not known.

The period is traditionally viewed as a time for families to reconnect with their lineage, remember those who came before them and continue ancestral customs across generations.

Customs may differ by family

There is no single set of practices followed by every family during Pitru Paksha. Ritual procedures and traditions may differ depending on regional and family customs.

Devotees are therefore advised to follow the practices prescribed by their family tradition or seek guidance from a qualified priest. Checking the correct local Tithi and Muhurat is also important before undertaking Shraddha rituals.
