Indian Railways Deploys KAVACH 4.0 on South Central Railway, Upgrades Safety System

KAVACH Upgraded from Version 3.2 to 4.0 on 108 Route Kilometres of Malkajgiri-Kamareddi Section in Hyderabad Division

Hyderabad- Indian Railways has commissioned the latest KAVACH 4.0 Automatic Train Protection system on the South Central Railway (SCR) for the first time, marking a major upgrade in railway safety technology.

The new version has been commissioned across 108 route kilometres of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section in Hyderabad Division, replacing the earlier KAVACH Version 3.2.

The upgrade incorporates technological improvements based on operational experience with KAVACH 3.2, which has already been deployed across 1,465 route kilometres on South Central Railway. Railway authorities said KAVACH 4.0 is designed to improve safety, reliability and operational efficiency and is intended for wider deployment across the Indian Railways network. KAVACH 4.0 introduces several improvements aimed at addressing the operational requirements of India’s diverse railway network. These include greater location accuracy, allowing more precise identification of a train’s position, and improved transmission of signal aspect information in larger railway yards.

The upgraded system also enables a station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC). In addition, it provides a direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, allowing better integration with railway signalling infrastructure. KAVACH is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed to assist loco pilots in maintaining prescribed speed limits. If necessary, the system can automatically apply brakes when the loco pilot fails to respond appropriately.

The technology is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), regulate train speeds in critical situations and reduce the possibility of collisions. It is also intended to support safer train movement during adverse weather conditions.

As a safety-critical technology, KAVACH requires certification at Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4), the highest level of safety integrity.

The deployment of KAVACH involves a range of trackside, communication and locomotive-based equipment. These include Station KAVACH installations at stations and block sections, RFID tags along railway tracks, telecommunications towers, Optical Fibre Cable networks and Loco KAVACH equipment on locomotives.

The commissioning of Version 4.0 on the South Central Railway is expected to provide a stronger technological base for the wider rollout of India’s indigenous automatic train protection system.

The latest deployment is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to strengthen railway safety through advanced technology and improve the reliability of train operations across the national network.
