J&K : In Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister for Agricultural Production and Rural Development, Javed Ahmad Dar, highlighted the environmental challenges resulting from rapid urbanization and industrial expansion. At the flag-off ceremony of the “Watershed Yatra” held at Government Degree College Hiranagar in Kathua district, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for a balance between development and environmental conservation. He stressed that while development is essential for progress, it must not come at the cost of ecological stability. The Minister urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to take part in the Yatra, which aims to raise awareness about environmental protection.
The Watershed Yatra, which spans 2,400 km across Jammu and Kashmir, is set to engage more than 5 lakh residents through a series of workshops, community activities, and awareness campaigns. The journey, which will run until the 1st of next month, will focus on educating the public on the importance of watershed conservation, the health of soils, and the methods of rainwater harvesting. The initiative is expected to generate substantial impact by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and encouraging the conservation of natural resources like water bodies and forests.
Mr. Dar’s remarks emphasized the crucial role of natural resources in mitigating the impacts of climate change. He specifically pointed out that the preservation of water bodies and forest cover is vital to counter the adverse effects of global warming and ensure long-term ecological health. The campaign aims not only to educate the public but also to inspire actionable changes that could significantly reduce environmental degradation.
The Minister also underlined that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility and that the participation of local communities is essential for creating a lasting impact. The Yatra will showcase practical techniques in watershed management, focusing on how communities can contribute to soil health improvement and sustainable water management practices.
