New Delhi, March 19, 2025: In a landmark announcement, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for its next major lunar mission, Chandrayaan-4. The mission will introduce advanced lunar docking technology and a lunar sample collection system, marking a significant step toward India’s goal of sending astronauts to the Moon by 2040.
The Chandrayaan-4 mission is expected to be a game-changer for India’s lunar exploration program. Unlike previous missions, this one will focus on:
✔ Lunar sample collection to bring Moon rocks and soil back to Earth for detailed research
✔ Docking technology on the lunar surface, crucial for future crewed Moon missions
✔ Enhanced surface exploration using advanced robotics and AI-driven instruments
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that Chandrayaan-4 will set the stage for India’s ambitious plan to land humans on the Moon by 2040, a vision laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The mission aligns with India’s long-term space roadmap, which includes establishing a space station by 2035 and deep-space exploration beyond the Moon.
In another major development, Dr. Singh revealed that Group Captain Shukla has been selected for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). He is one of the four astronauts currently undergoing training for India’s first human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.
Group Captain Shukla’s selection for the ISS mission highlights India’s growing collaborations with global space agencies, strengthening its presence in international space exploration. His training and experience will play a crucial role in India’s future space missions, including potential lunar landings.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also sent a personal letter to Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, conveying his good wishes for her upcoming space missions. In the letter, he extended an invitation for her to visit India, recognizing her role in inspiring young Indian scientists and space enthusiasts.
Sunita Williams, a veteran NASA astronaut, has strong Indian roots and has completed multiple missions aboard the International Space Station. Her connection with India continues to inspire the next generation of space explorers.
With Chandrayaan-4, Gaganyaan, and increased international collaborations, India is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in the global space community. The successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 and the planned Gaganyaan mission have already showcased India’s growing space capabilities.
With the government’s continued support and ISRO’s technological advancements, India’s dream of landing astronauts on the Moon by 2040 is gradually turning into reality.
