New Delhi : External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a meeting today with Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot in New Delhi. During their discussions, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized India’s long-standing historical ties with Belgium and reiterated the commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors.
Jaishankar highlighted that India and Belgium share “good and steady relations” in trade, industry, education, innovation, and culture. He also noted the increasing focus on emerging technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and clean energy, which are expected to form crucial pillars of future cooperation between the two nations.
Belgium is one of India’s key trading partners within the European Union, with substantial investments in industries such as diamonds, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. The two leaders discussed enhancing trade ties and boosting collaboration in critical sectors, including sustainable energy solutions.
As part of high-level engagements between the two countries, Dr. Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet Princess Astrid of Belgium later this afternoon in the national capital. Princess Astrid is on a seven-day visit to India, leading a high-powered Belgian business delegation. Her visit is aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During her visit, Princess Astrid will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow, where discussions are expected to revolve around expanding India-Belgium cooperation in trade, green energy, and technological innovation.
India and Belgium have a long history of strong diplomatic and economic relations. Belgium is one of India’s top trading partners in the European Union, particularly in the diamond trade, with Antwerp serving as a major global hub for diamond processing. The two countries have also been actively working together in areas like scientific research, clean technology, and cultural exchanges.
The latest round of high-level meetings comes at a time when India is strengthening its partnerships within the EU, particularly in areas related to sustainability, digital transformation, and industrial cooperation.
With increased discussions on semiconductors, AI, and clean energy, the India-Belgium partnership is set to explore new frontiers in innovation and economic growth.
