New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a newly built residential complex featuring 184 Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in the national capital. The four towers—named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly—pay tribute to India’s iconic rivers and symbolize unity across diverse regions.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister recalled recently inaugurating the Common Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhavan, at Kartavya Path, and expressed satisfaction at now providing modern homes for his fellow MPs.
“Just as the rivers sustain life across the country, these residences will bring a new stream of joy to the lives of public representatives,” he remarked.
PM Modi noted that the availability of quality housing in Delhi had long been a challenge for MPs, especially first-time legislators. Older accommodations often fell into disrepair, leading to frequent difficulties. The new flats, he said, would not only remove these hurdles but also allow MPs to focus more fully on their legislative and public service duties.
He pointed out that over 180 MPs will now reside in the complex, improving logistical convenience and fostering a sense of camaraderie. Emphasizing the economic benefits, the Prime Minister drew parallels with the savings achieved through Kartavya Bhavan, which reduced the government’s ₹1,500 crore annual rent bill for scattered ministries. Similarly, the MP housing project will cut costs associated with renting and maintaining older units.
Highlighting that no new Lok Sabha MP residences were built between 2004 and 2014, the Prime Minister said that since 2014, his government had constructed about 350 such units, including the current project.
The Prime Minister stressed that the housing initiative reflects 21st-century India’s dual commitment to progress and responsibility. Alongside MP residences, the country has delivered homes to 4 crore underprivileged families via the PM-Awas Yojana, established hundreds of new medical colleges, and ensured piped water for millions of households.
He also underlined the project’s sustainable design, from solar-powered infrastructure to green building certification under the GRIHA 3-star rating. “Our advances in solar energy and environmentally conscious construction are setting new benchmarks for sustainable development,” he said.
PM Modi encouraged MPs to embody the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat by celebrating regional festivals together, inviting constituents to participate, and exchanging words from each other’s languages. He urged all residents to make cleanliness and sustainability defining features of the complex, suggesting friendly Swachhata competitions among MP housing societies.
Built with advanced monolithic concrete technology for strength and timely delivery, the complex adheres to the National Building Code 2016 and is earthquake-resistant. It is also designed to be accessible for persons with disabilities. Each unit spans approximately 5,000 square feet, with space for both official and residential purposes, staff quarters, and a community center.
To mark the occasion, the Prime Minister planted a Sindoor sapling within the premises and met with the shramjeevis who contributed to the project.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers, and several MPs attended the event.
