“We Asked for Jobs, Got Lathis”, Patna Protest Puts Bihar’s Unemployment Crisis Back in Spotlight

Teacher aspirants allege police crackdown during employment protest as opposition attacks government over rising job crisis

Bihar, May 9: Patna witnessed fresh political controversy after videos and social media posts allegedly showing police action against protesting teacher aspirants went viral online. The protestors, reportedly demanding employment opportunities and recruitment transparency, had gathered peacefully in the city before clashes broke out with police personnel.

According to claims shared by opposition leaders and activists, several unemployed teacher aspirants were allegedly beaten during the protest. The incident has intensified the ongoing political debate around unemployment, especially among youth in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The viral post accused the state government of responding to unemployed youth with “lathis instead of jobs,” alleging that educated youngsters are being forced to struggle for employment despite holding degrees and qualifications. The post further criticized the ruling BJP-led government, claiming that unemployed youth are losing patience over delayed recruitments and lack of opportunities.

Opposition parties, including Congress leaders, have used the incident to attack the government over rising unemployment and handling of public protests. They alleged that peaceful demonstrators seeking jobs were met with force instead of dialogue.

Meanwhile, police officials have not yet issued a detailed public statement regarding the allegations circulating online. It also remains unclear whether any protestors or police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The issue has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users demanding accountability and faster recruitment processes for government jobs. Videos showing police personnel using batons during the protest continue to circulate online, drawing sharp criticism from opposition supporters.

Unemployment remains one of the most debated political issues in Bihar, where lakhs of aspirants prepare for competitive exams and government recruitment drives each year. Delays in examinations, recruitment processes, and appointment procedures have repeatedly led to protests across the state in recent years.

As political reactions continue to pour in, the incident is expected to further fuel the debate around youth employment and governance ahead of upcoming political campaigns in the state.
