BIMSTEC SEWOCON: Global Youth Leaders Unite for Climate Action at Bharat Scouts & Guides Conference

New Delhi, Feb 26,2025 : Former Army Chief General Dalbir Suhag, along with delegates from seven BIMSTEC nations, came together to tackle climate change challenges at the BIMSTEC SEWOCON – Youth Led Action on Climate Change. The four-day international conference, organized by Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, aimed to foster youth engagement in climate action and sustainable development.

A total of 122 dynamic youth leaders from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand participated in the event. The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, who emphasized the significance of regional cooperation in tackling environmental challenges.

The event provided a platform for young leaders to collaborate on climate initiatives, exchange ideas, and build partnerships for sustainable solutions. Prominent youth climate activist Licypriya Kangujam and Ms. Madhu from the Conscious Planet Movement – Sadhguru Foundation shared their insights on global climate movements and strategies for effective environmental advocacy.

During the closing ceremony, Dr. K.K. Khandelwal, IAS (Retd.), Chief National Commissioner, BSG, welcomed the participants and expressed gratitude for the collective efforts toward climate resilience. General Dalbir Singh Suhag praised the vibrancy and enthusiasm of the event, highlighting its importance in shaping future climate policies.

Indian professional boxer and Rajiv Khel Ratna Awardee Shri Vijender Singh also graced the occasion, pledging his commitment to climate advocacy and youth empowerment. Shri C.S.R. Ram, Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC), Ministry of External Affairs, acknowledged the valuable discussions and collaborations fostered during the conference.

The event featured engaging sessions, cultural exchanges, and interactive discussions, emphasizing the crucial role of youth in climate action. Dr. Anil Jain, President, BSG, lauded the participants’ efforts and reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to nurturing young leaders for a sustainable future.

A special highlight of the event was the presence of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports & Minister of Labour and Employment, who attended the International Night as the Chief Guest. He commended the Bharat Scouts and Guides for their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and assured continued support from the government.

The event concluded with the adoption of key climate action recommendations, which were handed over to BIMSTEC officials for further deliberation at the ministerial level. The BIMSTEC SEWOCON 2025 has successfully set the stage for enhanced regional collaboration and proactive youth-led climate initiatives across South Asia
