Indian National Nikhil Gupta Extradited to US Over Alleged Plot to Assassinate Khalistani Leader Pannun

New Delhi 17 June 2024: Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national suspected by US authorities of orchestrating a failed plot to kill Khalistani separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has been extradited from the Czech Republic to the United States. Gupta, aged 52, is accused of attempting to hire a hitman to assassinate Pannun, a dual US-Canadian citizen, in New York. He was apprehended last year in the Czech Republic based on a US extradition request. Currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Gupta is set to appear before a federal court in New York on Monday. The extradition has triggered diplomatic discussions between the US and India, although India has denied any involvement and launched its own investigation into the matter. Gupta, through his legal representative, has consistently denied the charges levied against him by US prosecutors, which carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
