NEW DELHI,02 JULY : Indian Railways has approved a major signalling modernisation project aimed at improving operational safety, efficiency and reliability on the Durg-Taroki section of Raipur Division under South East Central Railway (SECR). The project, sanctioned at a cost of ₹226 crore, involves the installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at 13 stations, replacing the existing Panel Interlocking (PI) technology.
The move is expected to strengthen railway operations by introducing advanced digital signalling infrastructure, enabling safer train movement and improving the overall efficiency of the railway network. The upgrade is part of Indian Railways’ continuous efforts to adopt modern technologies and enhance passenger and freight services across the country.
The project includes the implementation of Electronic Interlocking systems at 13 key stations located along the Durg-Taroki section of Raipur Division. These stations include Marauda, Risama, Gundardehi, Latabor, Balod, Kusumkasa, Dalli Rajhara, Gudum, Bhanupratappur, Keoti, Antagarh, Taroki and Raipur Store Depot. The replacement of the existing Panel Interlocking system with Electronic Interlocking will bring significant improvements in signalling operations. The advanced system will allow automated route setting and better monitoring of train movements while ensuring greater accuracy and safety.
Electronic Interlocking technology is designed with advanced safety mechanisms that reduce human intervention and minimise the chances of signalling errors. It also enables quicker fault detection and faster restoration of services during operational disruptions.
The introduction of EI systems will enhance the reliability of train operations by providing better control over signalling functions. The technology will support smoother train movements, improve punctuality and help railway authorities manage increasing passenger and freight traffic more effectively.
With real-time monitoring capabilities and improved system response, the upgraded infrastructure will help reduce delays caused by signalling issues. It will also provide railway personnel with a more efficient and dependable system for managing train operations.
The Durg-Taroki section is an important route under South East Central Railway, and the modernisation of its signalling infrastructure is expected to contribute significantly towards safer and faster transportation.
The approval of this project reflects Indian Railways’ broader strategy to upgrade its signalling systems across the country. By adopting advanced technologies such as Electronic Interlocking, Railways aims to create a smarter, safer and more efficient transportation network.
The modernisation initiative aligns with the vision of improving railway infrastructure through technology-driven solutions while ensuring better services for passengers and industries dependent on freight movement.
