New Delhi, 27 May 2025 – In a major push to advance India’s self-reliance in next-generation technologies, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated the Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, New Delhi. The centre was officially opened on May 27, 2025, by Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO.
The new facility is poised to enhance India’s indigenous capabilities in quantum science, particularly for critical defence and strategic needs. Designed with cutting-edge experimental setups, QTRC is equipped to drive innovation in vital areas of quantum research. Among its advanced tools are systems for analyzing Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and Distributed Feedback Lasers, testbeds for evaluating single-photon sources, and setups for assessing Micro Fabricated Alkali Vapor Cells.
One of the centre’s core objectives is to support the development of ultra-secure communication systems for the post-quantum era. In this regard, the Scientific Analysis Group (SAG) of DRDO is spearheading the establishment of experimental platforms for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a technology crucial for national cyber and data security.
The Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) is also playing a pivotal role in the facility’s operations, focusing on the development of foundational quantum technologies. These include an ultra-compact Atomic Clock based on Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) for precision timing in GPS-denied scenarios, an optically pumped Atomic Magnetometer for detecting extremely weak magnetic fields, and advanced solid-state quantum components and materials.
As a key contributor to India’s National Quantum Mission, DRDO is reaffirming its leadership in areas like quantum sensing, secure communication networks, and post-quantum encryption methods. The organisation remains committed to nurturing domestic innovation and ensuring India develops its own strategic quantum solutions.
The launch event was attended by several dignitaries including Smt Suma Varughese, Director General of Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems & Cyber Systems, whose strategic foresight played a critical role in establishing the QTRC. Also present were Dr. Manu Korulla, DG (Resource & Management), along with directors from SSPL and SAG, senior scientists, and other distinguished guests.
With the opening of QTRC, DRDO continues to lay the foundation for a robust and secure technological future for India in the global quantum race.
