New Delhi- A late-night tragedy unfolded in central Delhi after two cousins lost their lives in a hit-and-run incident on Ashoka Road while returning home from an Indian Premier League (IPL) match.
According to police officials, the victims — 20-year-old Yagya Bhatia and his 14-year-old cousin Abhav Bhatia — were riding a motorcycle when a speeding goods carrier rammed into them near the PNB Complex stretch. The collision occurred around 11 pm on Monday, shortly after they had left the stadium following a match featuring the Delhi franchise and Bengaluru.
A PCR alert brought police teams to the scene, where both victims were found critically injured and unconscious on the road. They were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Sachin Sharma, confirmed that the offending vehicle fled the scene after the crash. “We have identified the vehicle involved, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the driver,” he said.
The victims, residents of Ashok Nagar, had reportedly informed family members about their return journey after the match. Abhav had called his father shortly before the accident, assuring him they were on their way home.
Forensic teams inspected the accident site, and the bodies were later moved to the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and further investigation is ongoing.
