In Peru, a tragic accident has claimed the lives of at least 26 people and left over a dozen others injured. The incident occurred in the southern region of Ayacucho, where a passenger bus carrying around 40 passengers veered off the Los Libertadores highway and plunged into a ravine approximately 200 meters deep. The bus was en route from Lima to Ayacucho when the accident occurred. Those injured have been promptly taken to hospitals for medical treatment.
This accident highlights the frequent risks on Peru’s winding and mountainous roads, attributed to factors such as speeding, poor road maintenance, inadequate traffic signage, and lax enforcement of driving regulations. Last year alone, Peru, with a population of 34 million people, recorded over 3,100 fatalities from more than 87,000 traffic accidents, reflecting ongoing challenges in road safety across the country.
