New Delhi, July 17, 2026;

With the declaration of the NEET UG 2026 results, the admission process for undergraduate medical and dental courses is set to move into the counselling phase. Students seeking MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical seats will have to participate in the counselling process conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and respective state authorities, depending on the category of seats they are applying for.

The MCC is responsible for conducting counselling for the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical colleges. It also manages admissions to AIIMS, JIPMER, Central Universities, Deemed Universities, ESIC institutions and several other centrally administered medical colleges. The remaining 85 per cent seats in government colleges are filled through counselling conducted separately by individual states and Union Territories according to their respective admission rules.

Candidates who have qualified NEET UG 2026 and meet the prescribed eligibility conditions can participate in the counselling process. Registration for MCC counselling is carried out online, after which applicants are required to fill and lock their preferred choices of colleges and courses. Seat allotment is based on NEET rank, reservation category, availability of seats and the order of preferences submitted by the candidate.

The counselling process generally consists of multiple rounds, including Round 1, Round 2, Mop-Up Round and the Stray Vacancy Round. Candidates who receive a seat must report to the allotted institute within the stipulated time and complete document verification along with admission formalities to retain their allotted seat. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the allotment.

Reservation benefits under the All India Quota are available for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), as per the applicable Government of India norms. State counselling authorities may implement additional reservation policies based on domicile and local regulations.

Experts advise candidates to carefully review the counselling schedule, verify all required documents, research participating institutions and exercise caution while filling their college preferences. Since the choice-filling stage plays a crucial role in determining seat allocation, students are encouraged to prioritise their preferred colleges and courses before locking their options.

With medical admissions becoming increasingly competitive each year, timely registration, accurate documentation and informed decision-making during counselling remain essential for securing admission to a preferred institution.
