AIIMS Delhi Gets New Acting Director as Dr Nikhil Tandon Takes Charge

Appointment follows Dr M Srinivas’s move to NITI Aayog; tenure set for six months or until replacement

New Delhi- The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has appointed Dr Nikhil Tandon as the acting director of the premier medical institute, following the exit of Dr M Srinivas. The decision comes after Dr Srinivas was appointed as a full-time member of NITI Aayog.

According to an official statement, Dr Tandon—currently serving as professor and head of the department of endocrinology and metabolism, as well as dean (academics)—will take on the additional responsibility of director with immediate effect. His appointment is a temporary arrangement for a period of six months or until a regular director is appointed, whichever is earlier.

The order was issued under Rule 9(4) of the AIIMS Rules, 2019, authorising the institute’s president to assign interim charge in such situations. Dr Tandon will continue to perform his existing duties alongside his new role and will not receive any additional remuneration or honorarium for the assignment.

Dr Srinivas, who assumed office as AIIMS director in September 2022, has now transitioned to his new role at NITI Aayog. Prior to leading AIIMS, he served as dean at ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad.

The leadership change comes at a crucial time for AIIMS Delhi, one of India’s top healthcare and research institutions, as it continues to handle high patient volumes while advancing medical education and research initiatives.
