Indian Railways Posts Strong Freight Growth, Passenger Traffic Rises in June 2026

New Delhi, July 2, 2026: Indian Railways continued its upward growth trajectory in June 2026, reporting improved performance in both freight transportation and passenger movement. The national transporter witnessed higher cargo volumes, increased ridership and further expansion of its premium train network, reflecting sustained efforts to enhance logistics efficiency and strengthen public transport infrastructure across the country.

Freight Operations Show Healthy Momentum

During June, Indian Railways transported 142.21 million tonnes of freight, marking a 4 per cent increase over the 136.71 million tonnes handled in the same month last year. Freight operations also generated stronger revenues, with earnings rising by around ₹430 crore, translating into a 3 per cent year-on-year increase.

The growth was driven by increased demand across several industrial sectors. Fertilizer transportation posted the highest rise at 19.1 per cent, followed by Balance & Other Goods (17.3 per cent), Iron Ore (9.4 per cent), Clinker (7.2 per cent), Domestic Coal (4.9 per cent) and Total Coal (3.6 per cent).

Positive Start to FY 2026-27

The encouraging June figures strengthened Indian Railways’ overall performance during the first quarter of the current financial year. Between April and June 2026, freight loading reached 419.08 million tonnes, surpassing the 413.05 million tonnes recorded during the corresponding period of FY 2025-26.

Among major commodities, Iron Ore registered a growth of 7.44 per cent, Clinker increased by 6.54 per cent, while Balance & Other Goods recorded an impressive 12.16 per cent growth, indicating sustained industrial and infrastructure activity.

Coal Supply Boosts Power Generation

With electricity demand remaining high during the prolonged summer season, Indian Railways intensified coal transportation to thermal power plants. Domestic coal supplies to power stations increased by 7 per cent compared to June last year, ensuring adequate fuel availability and supporting uninterrupted electricity generation across multiple states.

Passenger Footfall Continues Upward Trend

Passenger services also registered steady improvement during the month. Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers in June 2026, compared to 62.37 crore during the same period last year.

The Non-Suburban category, which includes medium and long-distance travel, recorded stronger growth of 3.9 per cent, with passenger numbers rising from 28.90 crore to 30.04 crore. Meanwhile, the Suburban network also witnessed a modest increase of 0.9 per cent, carrying 33.77 crore passengers against 33.46 crore a year earlier.

Expansion of Premium Rail Services

As part of its modernization drive, Indian Railways further expanded its fleet of next-generation trains. The number of Vande Bharat services has now reached 164, including the recently launched Vande Bharat Sleeper connecting Howrah and Kamakhya.

Similarly, the Amrit Bharat network has grown to 72 services, following the inauguration of four additional trains during June. These services are aimed at improving affordable long-distance connectivity while offering upgraded passenger amenities.

Focus on Growth and Modernisation

The latest operational figures underline Indian Railways’ continued emphasis on improving freight capacity, expanding passenger services and upgrading railway infrastructure. With sustained investments in modern trains, logistics efficiency and customer-focused initiatives, the railway network continues to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s economic development while providing safer, faster and more reliable transportation nationwide.
