Cloth banks to be set up at Metro stations to promote recycling and create jobs for women: CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi, 3 May 2026- Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, addressing the Delhi Metro’s 32nd Foundation Day event as the chief guest on Sunday, announced a major expansion of the network. She said work under Phase IV and Phase V is progressing rapidly, and preparations are underway to begin construction on seven new corridors under Phase V (B), which will further strengthen connectivity across the capital. The Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji has recently dedicated two new Metro corridors to Delhi and laid the foundation stone for three more, work on which is already underway.

Describing the Metro as the ‘lifeline’ of Delhi, CM said it is not just a mode of transport but a symbol of efficiency, discipline and trust. She credited the employees, officers and support staff for their commitment, saying their professionalism has made the system a globally recognised model of urban transit.

Tracing its journey, she said that since the formation of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 1995, the network has expanded to 416 km. Despite initial challenges, the Metro earned public confidence through efficient operations and strict adherence to timelines and standards, while also establishing credibility within the administrative system. “Today, the word ‘Metro’ itself has become synonymous with reliability,” she said.

At present, the Metro operates 343 trains across 303 stations, running over 4,500 trips daily and serving more than 6.5 million passengers. The successful execution of complex engineering works, including nearly 100 km of underground tunnels, reflects its strong technical capabilities and robust management. “It is now difficult to imagine Delhi without the Metro,” the Chief Minister said.

Addressing pollution, one of Delhi’s biggest challenges, CM Rekha Gupta said strengthening public transport is key to a sustainable solution, with the Metro playing a central role. She added that alongside expanding routes and increasing train capacity, the government is focusing on improving last-mile connectivity and enhancing passenger experience.

She also highlighted that the Delhi Metro has received carbon credits from the United Nations and has helped reduce over 600,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, marking a significant contribution to climate action. Emphasising financial discipline, the Chief Minister said every rupee invested in Metro projects is being utilised transparently and efficiently, with a long-term vision to ensure a modern and resilient transport system for Delhi.

In a new initiative, The Chief Minister proposed setting up ‘cloth banks’ at Metro stations to facilitate the recycling of used garments. She suggested linking the initiative with women’s self-help groups to promote environmental sustainability while also generating livelihood opportunities. Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Tokhan Sahu, senior officials of DMRC, and members of the Delhi Metro family were present at the event.
