Washington- Investigators probing the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner have uncovered details about the suspect’s weapon purchases and alleged preparations leading up to the incident.
The accused, Cole Tomas Allen, is reported to have legally acquired multiple firearms over the past few years. According to reports, he purchased a semi-automatic pistol in October 2023 and later bought a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun in August 2025 from separate gun stores in California.
Authorities believe the attack may have been planned over several months. Allen, a postgraduate student at California State University-Dominguez Hills, is said to have travelled across the United States by train before arriving in Washington, where the event was being held at a major hotel venue.
Officials stated that he stayed at the hotel for a few days prior to the incident, raising concerns about how he managed to move undetected despite carrying weapons. Investigators are examining possible lapses in security protocols at the venue.
According to law enforcement sources, Allen had also shared a written document—described as a manifesto—with family members shortly before the attack. The document allegedly outlined potential targets, including senior government officials, and criticised what he perceived as weak security arrangements.
Reports suggest that he managed to breach security checks before being apprehended following the gunfire. A law enforcement officer injured during the incident is said to be out of danger.
Reacting to the attack, US President Donald Trump described the suspect as a disturbed individual and noted that he had previously been flagged by family members to authorities.
The incident has triggered renewed debate in the United States over event security, gun access, and threat detection at high-profile gatherings.
