PM Modi Targets TMC Government Over Women and Refugee Community Issues in Bengal Campaign

Focus on Dalit Matua voters and welfare promises as campaigning nears final phase

Thakurnagar, April 27, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday intensified his attack on the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee, alleging that women and the Matua community have suffered the most during the Trinamool Congress rule over the past 15 years.

Addressing a rally in Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas, Modi directly reached out to the Matua community for the first time in this election campaign. He said women had been the worst affected under the state government and claimed growing dissatisfaction was visible in voter participation.

The Prime Minister referred to recent voter list revisions that reportedly affected members of the Matua community. He also targeted the ruling party’s earlier slogan, alleging that its promises had not been fulfilled and accusing the government of corruption and mismanagement.

Modi announced several welfare promises for the state, including free food grain distribution, clean drinking water supply, financial assistance for solar energy installation, business loans for women, and annual financial support for female beneficiaries. He also reiterated the BJP’s commitment to job reservation for women.

The Matua community, largely belonging to the Namasudra group, has significant influence in districts like North 24 Parganas and Nadia. Modi said the Citizenship Amendment Act was introduced to protect refugee communities like the Matuas and assured citizenship benefits for eligible families.

He also visited the Matua Thakur Temple and paid tribute to community leaders, highlighting their cultural importance.In response, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Bala Thakur accused the BJP of failing to deliver on promises and raised concerns over voter list exclusions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also campaigned in the region, promising strict action against illegal infiltration and improved support for farmers.With polling in the final phase approaching, campaigning has intensified across West Bengal.
