Mamata Banerjee Moves Court Against Amit Shah Over Remarks

West Bengal Chief Minister alleges “violent language” ahead of crucial election phase

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday announced that she will file a legal case against Union Home Minister Amit Shah over what she described as “violent remarks,” escalating political tensions ahead of the next phase of Assembly elections.

Addressing a public gathering in Hooghly, Banerjee criticised Shah’s statements, saying such language was unacceptable from someone holding the position of Home Minister. “We are going to file a legal case against Amit Shah for his violent remarks. As Home Minister, he cannot make such comments,” she said.

The remarks come after Shah allegedly warned of strict action against Trinamool Congress workers, including a controversial statement about “hanging them upside down” if disturbances occur during polling.

Banerjee strongly condemned the statement, asserting that such rhetoric would not resonate with voters in West Bengal. She accused the BJP of adopting a forceful approach and said it would fail politically in the state.

The political exchange comes amid ongoing elections in West Bengal, where the first phase of polling recorded a high voter turnout of over 91 percent, according to the Election Commission of India.

The second phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, with counting of votes set for May 4. Political tensions are expected to remain high as campaigning intensifies across the state.
