PM Narendra Modi Condemns Washington Shooting, Calls Violence Against Democratic Values

Expresses Relief Over Safety of US Leadership After Incident

New Delhi, April 26, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denounced the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington DC, stating that violence has no place in a democracy.

In his response, Modi expressed relief that US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other senior leaders were unharmed following the security breach. He extended his wishes for their continued safety and well being.

The incident occurred during a high profile event attended by political leaders and journalists, where gunshots triggered panic and led to the evacuation of attendees. Reports indicate that a suspect opened fire near the venue but was quickly taken into custody, preventing major casualties.

Reiterating India’s stance, Modi emphasised that democratic societies must reject violence and uphold peace and stability at all times.
