Government Opens Nominations for Padma Awards 2027 Invites Citizens to Recommend Unsung Heroes

Deadline set for July 31 as Centre pushes for People’s Padma initiative

New Delhi, April 27, 2026: The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially begun the nomination process for the Padma Awards 2027, inviting citizens across the country to submit recommendations through an online portal. The process, which commenced on March 15, will remain open until July 31, 2026, with entries accepted exclusively via the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal.

The Padma Awards, which include Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, are among India’s highest civilian honours. Introduced in 1954, these awards are announced annually on Republic Day and celebrate individuals for exceptional contributions across diverse fields such as art, literature, education, sports, medicine, science, public service and social work.

Officials emphasised that the awards aim to recognise excellence without discrimination, making individuals from all backgrounds eligible. However, government employees, including those in public sector undertakings, are generally not considered, except for distinguished doctors and scientists.

In line with its vision of transforming these honours into a “People’s Padma,” the government has encouraged wider public participation. Citizens are urged to nominate deserving individuals, including self nominations, especially those who have made significant contributions at the grassroots level. Special focus is being placed on recognising talent from women, marginalised communities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and persons with disabilities.

Applicants must submit detailed information in the prescribed format available on the portal, including a citation of up to 800 words highlighting the nominee’s achievements and impact. The Ministry has also made additional information, including rules and eligibility criteria, accessible through its official website and the dedicated Padma Awards portal.

With this initiative, the government aims to bring forward inspiring stories of service and excellence from across the country, ensuring that deserving individuals receive national recognition.
