Karnataka: A serious crime involving a foreign national has come to light in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, where a woman from the United States has alleged that she was drugged and sexually assaulted while staying at a homestay.
According to police, the incident occurred in Kutta village, where the woman had checked in during her visit to India. In her complaint, she stated that she was given a drink allegedly mixed with intoxicating substances, after which the assault took place.
Officials confirmed that one of the accused, believed to be from Jharkhand, has been arrested. The homestay owner has also been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to suppress the matter.
Investigators said there is initial evidence suggesting that the victim’s access to communication was restricted for several days. It is alleged that internet services at the property were deliberately cut, limiting her ability to seek help.
After managing to leave the premises, the woman reportedly contacted authorities in the United States, which led to communication between US officials and Indian agencies. The case has also reached the Ministry of External Affairs, with officials monitoring developments.
Police said both accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigation is ongoing. Forensic analysis and digital evidence collection are currently underway to establish the sequence of events.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that swift action was taken once the matter surfaced and assured that strict legal steps will follow.
Authorities have emphasised that all aspects of the case, including any possible attempt to cover up the incident, are being thoroughly examined.
