Karnataka: A major road accident on National Highway 50 in Karnataka’s Vijayanagara district left four people dead and 20 others injured after a lorry allegedly lost control and triggered a chain collision involving multiple vehicles, police said.
The crash occurred near Danapur village in Hosapete taluk, where authorities said the lorry rammed into several vehicles, including a government bus, a car and two-wheelers, before overturning by the roadside.
Police said the impact caused heavy casualties, with multiple victims sustaining serious injuries. Several of the injured were shifted to hospitals for treatment, including some referred for advanced care, while others were treated locally.
Investigators have indicated that driver negligence may have played a role in the accident. Officials also noted that highway repair and bridge construction activity was underway in the area, which may form part of the broader investigation.
The collision led to major traffic disruption, with congestion stretching for several kilometres on both sides of the highway as emergency response teams worked at the scene.
Police have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash and are in the process of registering a case.
