Srinagar Airport Alert: Two US Citizens Detained After Suspected Banned Device Found in Luggage

Suspicious device found during security screening at Srinagar airport

Kashmir: Two US citizens were detained for questioning at Srinagar International Airport after security personnel discovered a device initially suspected to be a restricted communication tool in a passenger’s luggage, officials said.

The device triggered scrutiny during routine screening, prompting airport authorities to refer the matter to police for further examination. The two travellers, who were reportedly scheduled to fly from Srinagar to Delhi, were questioned as officials assessed whether the equipment violated security regulations.

Police later indicated that preliminary findings suggested the device may not be a satellite communicator, as initially suspected, but a GPS-based navigation device used for locating positions in areas without mobile coverage.

Officials said no suspicious activity had emerged so far and indicated the two individuals were likely to be released after routine verification. Authorities also said no case had been registered, with the inquiry focused on clarifying the purpose of the device and the travellers’ use of it.

The incident has renewed attention on India’s strict rules surrounding unauthorised possession of certain communication devices, including satellite-enabled equipment, which can require prior government approval. Further checks were continuing, officials said.
